Well, it's been two years since I snapped my Achilles tendon. I can walk normally and it doesn't affect my rowing. But I still can't run or jump off my right foot. The chief recommendation for rehab is Isometric heel raises. My "I" division 2k World record was beaten this year by Jeremy Martin in the UK (by 0.6 of a second) . I had hoped to 'hit the ground running' and try to set another record in the next age group, "J", as I turned 80, but the achilles tendon injury put a stop to that. Now Another Pan Pacific Masters Games is coming 'round in November, and I'm 82 - into the middle of that age group. But I can still give it a try. After all, I had set my previous record at 77 not 75!
As for training, I have so far mainly done Foundation work: UT2/UT3 duration pieces, and some 5 stroke Strides interspersed within some of the duration rows, weight training, a block of Peak Power training, and a set of Tempo paced Cruise intervals every two weeks.
The plan was to increase weekly milage, but, looking back over my progress, I haven't really done that. I seem to need more recovery time and, if I do a weight training session, that's it for the day. At 82 no more concurrent training for me! Now I have the next phase of training where I try to increase the number of 1k or 2k Cruise intervals and increase their pace from Tempo to full Threshold pace. Wish me luck!
